Rubio won 9th Republican debate: Poll

A poll conducted after the ninth Republican presidential debate in Greenville, South Carolina, has found that a plurality of viewers think GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio has won the contest.

According to the CBS News poll of Republicans and independents, 32 percent of respondents thought Rubio was the winner, followed by 24 percent who saw Donald Trump as the victor.

Nineteen percent picked Ohio Governor John Kasich and 12 percent considered Texas Senator Ted Cruz won the event.

More than 600 viewers participated in the poll which was carried out on Saturday night.

Rubio told CBS on Sunday that he prevailed during the debate because he responded to all attacks launched by his opponents against him.

"I would prefer the debates be all about policy. If you watch, I never launch these attacks, but if I'm attacked, I need to respond," he said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "I think that was a mistake I made a week ago when I didn't."

But Rubio did launch some attacks against his rivals, he specifically targeted Cruz with whom he has tangled in several debates.

The debate was critical for Rubio after his disastrous performance last weekend in New Hampshire, where New Jersey Governor Chris Christie denounced him as scripted after Rubio kept repeating the same stock attack on President Barack Obama.

The debate had hurt Rubio and he finished fifth in the New Hampshire primary. Then Rubio promised supporters that he would not make the mistakes he made during the New Hampshire debate on Saturday night.
